From Lavender Fields to Soap Making
The story of Le Chatelard begins in 1802 in the hills of Provence, where the founding family cultivated lavender and other aromatic plants.
For generations, the business remained rooted in the agricultural traditions of the region. During the 1990s, the family began selling lavender sachets directly to visitors and market-goers in Nice, creating what would become the Le Chatelard brand. What started as a practical diversification soon revealed a growing demand for products that reflected the fragrances and character of Provence.
The next chapter came in 2004 with the construction of a soap factory in Saint-Auban-sur-l'Ouvèze, allowing the company to begin producing its own soaps and expand beyond lavender alone.
Today, Le Chatelard remains closely associated with the colours, fragrances and everyday traditions of Provence.
Why Le Chatelard Matters
Not every French soap maker begins with soap. Le Chatelard's origins lie in agriculture, fragrance and the landscape of Provence itself. This background continues to shape the character of the collection, where fragrance plays as important a role as formulation.
The result is a range that captures a distinctly Provençal style: colourful, fragrant and inspired by the flowers, herbs and fruits that have long defined southern France.
Provence Through Fragrance
While traditional Marseille soap is often defined by simplicity and utility, Le Chatelard approaches soap through fragrance and sensory experience.
Lavender remains central to the brand's identity, reflecting its origins, but the collection has expanded to include a wide range of floral, citrus, herbal and fruit-inspired fragrances. Each draws upon ingredients and aromas closely associated with Provence and the wider Mediterranean region.
The fragrances are complemented by the vibrant colours for which the brand has become known, creating soaps that feel unmistakably French.
A Modern Provençal Soap Maker
Since establishing its soap production facilities in 2004, Le Chatelard has developed into one of the best-known fragrance-led soap makers in Provence.
Production remains centred in the region, allowing the company to maintain a close connection to its origins while continuing to develop new fragrances and collections.
Rather than preserving a historic soap-making tradition, Le Chatelard represents a more contemporary expression of Provençal soap making: rooted in place, inspired by fragrance and shaped by the everyday pleasures of southern France.
Why We Stock Le Chatelard
At French Soaps, we see Le Chatelard as an expression of modern Provence.
The brand combines colourful presentation, approachable fragrances and reliable soap-making with a genuine connection to the region from which it originates. While very different from the great Marseille savonneries, it offers another side of French soap culture: one shaped by lavender fields, local markets and the fragrance traditions of Provence.
Its popularity reflects the enduring appeal of simple, well-made soaps inspired by place.
