Savon de Marseille — Novelty Shapees

The soaps in this collection are made from the same Traditional olive oil Savon de Marseille but cast into traditional decorative forms and fitted with a hanging cord.

Rope soaps are a practical format. The cord allows the soap to be hung between uses so it dries properly and remains easy to locate in the bath or shower. The same format also lends itself to wardrobes and cupboards, where the clean scent of olive soap has long been used to freshen stored fabrics.

The shapes themselves draw on familiar symbols of Marseille and Provence — simple variations on the same traditional olive oil soap.

  • Wardrobe Soap

Savon de Marseille has traditionally been used in wardrobes and linen cupboards.

A slice of olive oil soap hung among stored clothing slowly releases the clean scent of traditional soap, which lightly freshens fabrics over time. The alkaline nature of the soap has also historically been used in wardrobes as a simple deterrent against moths and other fabric pests.

For this reason Marseille soap is regularly kept among linens and clothing and is the reason so many old delicate lace and crochet items are still in pristine condition today.

  • Marseille Symbols

Savon de Marseille has often been cast into forms that reference the identity of the city and region where the soap tradition developed.

The cigale, the cicada, is a familiar symbol throughout Provence and appears widely in local craft, ceramics and architecture. The sardine reflects Marseille’s historic fishing port and the maritime culture that shaped the city’s economy.

These shapes are not different soaps. They are the same olive oil Savon de Marseille, simply cast into forms that acknowledge the place from which the soap originates.

  • Soap on a Rope

Soap on a rope is a practical format that allows the bar to be hung between uses so it drains and dries properly. The rope also makes the soap easier to use in the shower or bath and can make handling simpler for those with reduced grip strength or poor eyesight.

The versatility of this soap continues with this small design change.
